David Bitner

David Bitner

David Hall Bitner

David was born in Park City, UT on June 1, 1948 to Blaine and Rose Bitner. He graduated from Highland High School class of 1966. David served an LDS Mission to the Eastern States Mission from 1967 to 1969 and upon his return, found the love of his life, and was sealed for time and all eternity to Karen Ruth Officer on May 7, 1970. David earned his Bachelors degree from the University of Utah and his Masters Degree in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado.

He was a loving father to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

David worked for Bitner Excavating, Pine Canyon Ranch for Boys, Wildlife Resources, Harper Excavating, and Midvale City. David loved all kinds of music and enjoyed singing. He especially loved to sing hymns and had a beautiful singing voice. He participated in many community musicals and played lead roles such as Luther Billis in South Pacific and Mr. Webb in Our Town. David loved books and reading. It was common for him to finish a book a day.

David served in many capacities within the LDS Church from Stake Sunday School president to mission leader. He always professed that his favorite calling of all was when he served in the nursery. David has a beautiful testimony and would talk in great length to his children and grandchildren of his love for his Savior and his gratitude for the atonement. In his later years, he enjoyed Perry Mason, Bones, Antique Road Show and any Spaghetti Western he could find. He always had a good joke and his laugh was contagious. David spoke daily of his desire to be reunited with “his girl” again and we know there surely was a grand reunion in Heaven July 1 when he stepped through the door.

David is survived by His Children Emily (Jason) Hill, Alexander (Karen) Bitner, Seth (Cindy) Bitner, Amanda Bitner, Anne Marie (Nicholas) Hemingway and His Grandchildren Alexis (James) Cason, Lindsay (Matthew) Astill, Christian Hill, Gabrielle Hill, Sarah Hill, Felicity Bitner, Ashley Bitner, Jacob Bitner, Benjamin Bitner, Grayce Bitner, Nicco Hemingway, Lola Hemingway, and Rose Hemingway and His Great Grand children Timothy Cason, Emma Astill, and Addison Astill.

David is preceded in death by his wife, “sweet” Karen Officer Bitner; his parents, Blaine and Rose Bitner and Brother, Mark Bitner.

Offered on website from Douglas Webb:

It was sad to hear of David Bitner's passing, and not long after losing his wife Karen Officer last year. It seems that we are all getting older, but the memories of Highland High School and the friends we made never seem to fade. Condolences to his children and grandchildren as then now take the helm of the Bitner legacy.

One of the things I remember most about David is his smile. It was absolutely contagious. His smile complemented his personality, too. Looking at the picture above in adulthood and reading his obit certainly suggests that he maintained that delightful personality and kept on sharing that warming grin. You will be missed!

  • Following high school, I pedaled a bicycle around the United States two summers in a row.  Each evening when I biked into a city to spend the night, I would often search for LDS missionaries with whom I might find a place to stay.  While pedaling through New Jersey on a Saturday evening I was pleasantly surprised when phoning the missionaries, I was speaking with Elder David Bitner.  What a coincidence!  I stayed the night and attended church with him and his companion the following day. Though our association in high school was minimal, I learned his family owned the Bitner ranch close to Park City and Karen Officer was a special friend.  I’ve never forgotten his kindness to me and felt a close bond to him ever since.

You are right about his generous smile. It brought a smile to my face also.  I was able to reconnect with David in 2016 at his wife's viewing. With his loving ways and great smile still there, he expressed his love for his tender and kind wife Karen (Officer) and how much he enjoyed his friendships with HH classmates.  Truly a wonderful and gentle man has left our ranks.
