Jean McCullough Ingleby

Jean McCullough Ingleby passed away on May 24, 2023 after a long struggle with vascular dementia. She was born in Palo Alto California on March 26, 1948 to Leland Stanford McCullough and Helen Ester Field. She graduated from Highland High School and earned a Bachelor's degree in art history and political science from the University of Utah. Jean married Steven Lee Ingleby in the Salt Lake Temple on September 21, 1970. They were longtime residents of Cottonwood Heights Utah where they raised five children.

Jean had a passion for service. As a devoted Latter-day Saint, she spent many happy hours serving in the Young Women's organization and the Relief Society. She loved to minister to anyone in need and never turned down an opportunity to lend a helping hand. She loved going to the temple where she felt an immense peace and closeness to God. Teaching at the LDS institute with Steve was an opportunity she remembered with great fondness. One of her most treasured life experiences was serving a mission at the Salt Lake Observation and Assessment Center and The Girls Transition Center. There she fell in love with dozens of young people whose struggles deeply touched her heart.

As an enthusiastic fan of culture and the arts, Jean loved plays, broadway shows, the ballet, the symphony and even attended an opera or two. She traveled extensively and was particularly fond of Europe where she reveled in its history, art, and majestic beauty. In Paris Jean discovered what she believed to be the crown jewel of western civilization: the French lemon tart. Jean believed pairing a lemon tart with a Diet Coke made for a meal that rivaled the children of Israel’s own manna from heaven. Lest you think Jean’s tastes were all high-brow, she did own several Barry Manilow albums and much preferred Tom Clancy and James Bond to William Shakespeare and Jane Austin.

Being a loyal friend was Jean’s real passion. She truly loved people and prided herself in being a good listener. She couldn’t understand why anyone would want to bother with a hobby when you could be out taking a walk with a good friend. For her, being a part of one book club was okay, but she believed that you really didn’t get to cruising altitude unless you had a second book club on the side.

Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother. As the guardian of many beloved family traditions, she made sure the family clearly understood that Christmas wouldn’t be merry without a roller skating party and if you never celebrated St. Nicholas Eve, you should. Her family will dearly miss the pancakes and fresh raspberries served daily at her old Bear Lake cabin. Her home will be remembered as the family gathering place, equal parts convention center and amusement park with an onsite counseling office staffed 24/7.  Jean believed that gathering people together in a safe space to love, laugh, talk and play was essential to her family’s well being. She was right about that and will be deeply missed.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother David McCullough. She is survived by five children: Adam (Ann), Nicole (Mike), Christopher (Aracely), Aaron (Carla), Joshua (Melanie); 14 grandchildren, Brant, Tyler, Jacob, Rhett, Chase, Maya, Marissa, Kyle, Alexa, Lainey, Avan, Caroline, Samuel, and Jane.

A viewing is scheduled from 6:00-8:00 pm on May 30th at the Cannon Mortuary located at 2460 Bengal Blvd in Cottonwood Heights. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 31st at the LDS Chapel at 2695 East 7000 South in Cottonwood Heights. The services will be preceded by a viewing from 10:00-10:45 a.m.  What interment Mountain View Memorial Estates.
