James Hall Woodward
March 3, 1948 ~ June 26, 2025
James Hall Woodward passed away on June 26, 2025 at home after a heroic battle with ALS.
Jim was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jim and Marsy Woodward on March 3, 1948. He was the big brother to his sister Jamey and brother, Chris. Chris has been a steadfast friend and took Jim on rides frequently when Jim was no longer able to get out independently.
Jim attended Highland High School, and later graduated from the University of Utah with high honors. He was a lifelong Utah fan, and loved taking his children and grandchildren to basketball and football games to cheer on the Utes.
As a devout disciple of Jesus Christ, Jim served two missions- one as young man in Denmark and later as mission leaders with his wife, Carolyn, in the England, Leeds mission from 2004-2007. Until the end of his life, he continued to love and care for each of his missionaries. Through his many years of service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jim had the opportunity to know and love many special people, and in turn, he was a much-loved leader.
Shortly after his mission to Denmark,
Out of college, Jim began his career in the financial services industry. His integrity earned the respect and life-long friendships of his clients. He was the general agent of both Connecticut Mutual and MassMutual insurance companies and oversaw offices throughout the intermountain west.
Near the end of his career, Jim and his friend, Tom Lloyd founded the Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF). The foundation became a prominent feature of Jim's life and grew out of his generous heart and desire to help less fortunate members of our community, especially immigrants. Jim always held the belief and demonstrated to those around him that those who've been much blessed have a responsibility to love and serve others as Christ would. The Rosepark Neighborhood Center, established by the Good Samaritan Foundation, has been the means of providing services to thousands of people in need. The Neighborhood Center was dear to Jim's heart.
Jim and his beloved Carolyn are the proud parents of five children, Emily (Joe) Taylor, Anna (John) Evensen, Nathan (Megan) Woodward, Jacob (Katie) Woodward, and Elizabeth (Anton) Brog. Jim was an involved dad and papa who attended every match, game, meet, or competition that his children and grandchildren participated in. The abundance of love shown by his involvement in the lives of his 16 grandchildren was unmatched and continued up until a few days prior to his passing. He has three grandchildren serving full-time missions around the world. He could not be more proud of his missionaries - those who have served and those who are currently declaring the good news that we will all be reunited as a family because of our magnificent Savior, Jesus Christ.
Special thanks to the caregivers and friends who lovingly served Jim during his illness. Jim is survived by the love of his life, Carolyn; his children, his 16 grandchildren, brother, Chris and sister, Jamey. A visitation will be held on Jul 1, 2025 at Larkin Sunset Gardens (1950 E. Dimple Dell Road). Funeral services will be held at the Cottonwood Stake Center (1830 E. 6400 South) at 11 am on Jul 2, 2025, preceded by a visitation at 9:30 am. Interment will follow the funeral service at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.
