Carol Roghaar Astin                                                      1947 ~ 2024

Beloved wife, mother, Nana, and sister, Carol Roghaar Astin, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on September 23, 2024, after a long battle with MS. She will forever be remembered by all who knew her for her tender heart, beautiful joy, positive influence, hopeful outlook, and most of all, for her endless love for those around her. Carol lived an exceptional life and was a woman who truly filled every measure of her creation. With everything Carol did, she gave it her all.

Carol was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 3, 1947, to her wonderful parents: John Roghaar and Ruth Sorensen Roghaar. Carol grew up in the Highland Park Sugarhouse area and graduated from Highland High School in 1966, where she met her sweetheart, Lorin William Astin. She also attended Utah State University and went on to work in the Jordan School district as a teacher’s aid in the work-based learning program for 20 years.

She married her adoring husband, Lorin, on July 25, 1968, and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. In her later years, as Carol’s MS progressed, she was so appreciative of Lorin’s tender care and constant support. In their time together he rarely left her side and cared for her through her last breath.

Together, Lorin and Carol, had six children: John (Beverly) Astin, Scott Astin, Robert (Jennifer) Astin, Steven (Rebecca) Astin, Allison (Justin) Bryner, Parker (Chandler) Astin along with their 14 grandchildren: Grace, Beau, Channing, Andrew, Derek, Ashlee, McKenzie, Morgan, Madison, Whitney, Katelyn, Brooklyn, Liam and Gabriel.

Carol loved family gatherings, and always made sure everyone around her was enjoying themselves. She loved decorating her house for every holiday, and loved celebrating with her beloved children and grandchildren. Every candid photograph you see of her at any gathering showed her beautiful smile. She was always smiling while looking at others who appeared to be having a good time. She loved her family and was so proud of the accomplishments of her children.

She raised a faithful daughter who received her Young Women’s Medallion, and raised five steadfast sons who all received their Eagle Scout Awards and each served honorable missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She was such a stylish woman, with an outfit for every occasion. She always looked good, because that made her feel good, and she always encouraged her daughter and granddaughters to do the same. Carol was magnificent when it came to creativity and she had a brilliant mind for making anything and everything beautiful. Whether it be cross stitches, quilts, cards, gifts and decorations for every holiday, she always knew how to make anything lovely for people to enjoy.

Carol’s life was an incredible testament of the love she had for her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was always striving to be like Him in every aspect of her life; to know her, was to know Him. She constantly taught her family to live the golden rule of doing unto others as they would have done unto them. Carol lived her life in such a way that those who did not know Christ would want to know Him because they knew her. Charity and love permeated her soul, and all who knew her could feel her love. She had a goal to encourage and uplift anyone she knew. Carol faithfully served in her many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She cherished the time she spent serving the youth of the church in many capacities, including her time as Young Women’s President. She joyfully performed acts of service for everyone around her and constantly engaged in random acts of kindness. Carol beamed with the light of Christ every time she smiled. Her faith was the most important thing to her, and she truly lived the Two Great Commandments: she loved God and she loved her neighbor.

2 Timothy 4:7 says: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Carol’s life echoes the words written here. She was a shining example of persistence in continually striving to be perfected in Christ. She endured to the end with faith and hope like none other. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is reunited with her Savior, and her loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her three sisters: Linda, Bonnie and Vicki, her husband, her 6 children and their spouses, and 14 grandchildren.

I knew Carol at Irving Jr. High, and then, of course, Highland. I can close my eyes and just picture her "always" with this big smile, even as she would talk! She was such a bubble of enthusiasm!  I loved reading her accomplishments through her obituary.  What a truly noble lady she became through her life, and example for so many. For sure she will be loved and missed always, but never forgotten for so many wonderful reasons.  RIP dear Carol.
