50th Reunion snapshot!  June 4th, 2016(see more photos at above tab "Reunion Memories"

OUR 56TH REUNION @ SUGARHOUSE PARK WAS A SUCCESS!  THANK YOU RAMS!!

Well. It has been 10 days since our 55th (really 56th) Highland reunion.  Just a short description for all you who couldn’t or wouldn’t come, for the many many reasons we certainly understand.  On Friday August 19th, about 30 of us descended on the Outback Steakhouse located somewhere named Cottonwood Heights at 13th east and 8132nd south…or thereabouts.  WAY WAY South.  (Please understand that Jeanne and I got out of here in 1970…and we have a poor understanding of what has happened to our beloved Salt Lake Valley since).

The lovely Pat Butler Holloway and Joanne Levinson Thomas put this together, and THANK YOU.  I’d give you the names of everyone who came…but who really cares?  Just the ones who arrived, we had a great time…as good as 30 74 year olds can without use of an AED.

Saturday the 20th saw about 125 of us and our spouses and a few other wild mallards and coots congregate at Sugarhouse Park’s Fabian Lakeside Pavilion (probably named after that greaseball singer and teen idol Fabian who was just before our time.  I really can’t name any of his “hits”…can you?  I certainly can’t sing them with the aplomb he showed our world).

Bottled spring water was supplied for all of us. Dave Robinson brought the ice.  Ann Bennion Robinson contributed our Highland High Class of 66 banner, which she has kept hermetically sealed in her garage between our get-togethers.  Jim Saley had the guts to climb a ladder to hang the banner, and not himself.  No 60’s music blared over any loudspeakers (certainly not Fabian’s), no sound system nor speeches interrupted our drivel. Quite a few brought our own food, with very little sharing…and a lot of hissing when our picnic table space was in peril.  Our slow ingestion of mostly carbs needn’t be interrupted.

Marsha Draper Fryer brought name tags, black and white picnic table cloths, and a couple of photo boards with our classmates who have left us with only memories.  I didn’t count the number, but it certainly seems substantial, and it increases almost monthly.  So it goes.  Thank heavens for name tags, lots of faces that have “weathered”, and lots of old friends we need as many hints as possible to remember.  Name tags help…kind of…a bit.

East High School had the Pavilion next to us up the hill.  There was a bit of cross-pollinization between us, mostly convivial.  No one was thrown into the “lake”…no West Nile viral disease was apparently contracted, according to the BYU branch of the CDC.

The temperature was in the 70’s.  It was a wonderful, perfect day.  Many of us arrived at 4 pm, there was still a good quorum at 9, when we folded the tent and headed to our homes.  We really have a great group we went to school with.  It seems more enjoyable with each reunion, understanding there seems to be less and less Rams and Ewes who will congregate.

Congratulations to all of us, the ones who came and the ones who have an interest to read a little bit about it.  Should we have a 60th in 2026?  That remains to be seen.  Let us see what the future unfolds for us.  Please let us stay healthy and alive until then.  In the meantime, why not call your best Highland friend tonight…or 16 weeks from next Tuesday.  Best wishes!

An offering by Ms. Jeanne Bridwell Bennion:

The Evergreen Trees So Tall!

The Sycamore Leaves so Giant & Green!

Our Conversations were like the Sycamore Leaves:

Vibrant, Fresh & Green.

We talked about the Things We Love,

Our families & friends, our gardens & travels,

The things we have cultivated that bring us joy.

We talked about Rebecca’s Chocolates, Ramona Shay’s cherry tree,

camping off the grid in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

One of us was 13 yrs. old when she 1st saw Mt. Olympus & The Wasatch Rockies.

She vowed at the first opportunity to move & live near them~~arriving in Salt Lake City at 17 yrs. old.

We talked about Norwegian & Swedish speaking grandmothers.

About Slovenia, Boston & Uruguay.

About Himalayan Roses & writer’s block.

We talked about A’Capella & how much it meant to sing.

We talked about cross-country running & grandchildren who now play soccer.

We met relatives not seen for years.

Such a beautiful array of picnic baskets!

Our reunion truly was a BREAD & ROSES EVENT ~~

A moment to gather in conversation that was joyful, vibrant & green.

Guess what, Rams and Ewes?  Somehow we forgot to have our 55th Reunion last year.  No one would have come anyway, largely because of the covid crisis.  So there!

Well, it is time to have our 55th reunion...one year late.  BUT HEY!  We have set aside the Sugar House Park Fabian Lakeside Pavilion on Saturday, August 20th, 2022, from 4-10 pm.  We have our old generic Highland High 50th reunion banner that will be flying under the covered structure in the summer heat.

* Walkers and quad-canes, wheelchairs and gurneys, pulleys and trusses, iron lungs and golf carts are all welcome.  No steps, or severe inclines to fall over.

*A very close-by series of restrooms are a spitting distance from our shaded tables which will have hermetically-clean disposable covers over them.  Please bring your own food, medications and vitamins.  We will provide cold bottled water, but nothing else…other than memories and laughs and coughs.  Name tags will certainly be in order.  We wanted it eezy peezy for all!

* No music.  No sound system. No weapons allowed.

 * The nearest children’s playground is WAY off toward the old South High School parking lot.  No need to hear any screaming from our great grandchildren…or their ilk.  We will have a beautiful view of the Wasatch Mountains at a very distant location from the Sugar House paramecia-infested pond which is downwind from us.

* No charge.  Be there or be square.  Lawn chairs welcome, if you wish!

** ALSO, our own Pat Butler Holloway and Joanne Levinson Thomas (but not necessarily in that order) want to host a lunch on Friday, August 19th at a restaurant.  Anyone and everyone need to let them know if you want them to make reservations for you and your spouse and significant other, so they can plan the shindig more accurately, and set aside a nice place to meet and eat.  It certainly will not be quiet after we arrive, and we are sure the restaurant will never make that mistake again.   More info to follow on this Friday event!

* So, here we are, making are our first announcement for this on this Highland High School Class of ’66 website and will work from this.  PLEASE let your Highland friends in on these planned festivities.

Best wishes.  Stay healthy and stay alive.

XOXO   Scott Bennion and Marsha Draper Fryer

56th Class of '66 Reunion UPDATE!!

GUESS WHAT EWES & RAMS? The East High School Leopards’ Class of ’66 has also scheduled their 56th reunion at a close-by Sugar House Pavilion the same afternoon as we have, yes, on AUGUST 20th, from 4-10 pm!

Interesting stuff, huh? From our side, we have agreed to do this, as long as there is a police presence with canines, as we know there is a great chance things can get out of hand! Also, we need a few AED’s to treat potential cardiac events if fisticuffs (or water balloons) start up between the two camps. Salt Lake County Police’s finest have demanded we don’t bring stun guns, mace or bear spray, or arrests will be warranted.

Each of the East High crowd will also bring their own food and drinks, like us…although they also have copied our promise of free bottled water to everyone. Let us see whose is the better.

By the way, just because they are there doesn’t mean we have to acknowledge them at all. But, maybe they should forgive us for the many slaughters we inflicted on them athletically and academically, if they still have a bad taste in their mouths after all these years.

Xoxo, Scott Bennion and Marsha Draper
